The Best Place to be in The Matobo Hills

Greetings From The Heart of Scouting!
The warm weather has, but for all of a few days, remained with us. When it did cool down a week ago it really went right down, for the thermometer dropped to -5 degrees C. Water in the pipes froze and it wasn't until mid morning that we were able to fire up, no pun intended, the pumps. A small problem was discovered at number three well when there was no pressure at the pump-head, and going to the storage tanks up in the kopjes all we could hear coming out of the pipe was air and then a sudden jet of water sprayed out nearly knocking Chris for a 'six', then back to air with suitable gurgling noises.

This Behaviour indicated a break in the pipe. Now where to look for this break, considering that the pipe is buried underground for something like five hundred metres? Well, us old "chappies" are a little more switched on than what the younger generation give us credit for, for in the blink of an eye the break was located and attended to, albeit on a temporary basis. The permanent repair will be undertaken when the appropriate materials have been obtained.

This week's picture. The Naomi Conoly Lodge. This building, comprising a large hall, storeroom, bedroom and kitchen was constructed over weekends between 1978 and 1981 by Scouts from the 8th Bulawayo (Hillside) and the 11th Bulawayo (Riverside) Scout Groups.

The most exciting news for quite some time concerning the Park, is that a group of four White Rhinoceros (Ceratotherium simum) paid us a visit this past week and to show their approval, they have left their visiting cards. The usual Leopard, Warthog, Kudu, Baboon along with the other resident smaller animal tracks were in great profusion. Just goes to show that even the animals approve that the best place to be in the Matobo Hills, is in "The Heart of Scouting".

The Rhino's presence on the camping ground in the "Bowl" could have a few Scouts camping in the trees, for the annual William Arnold Carnegie Assagai Competition takes place this coming weekend.

Cheers
Norman

This past week...

The photo of the boulder is quite amazing! And we all thought it was only erent Scouts who encouraged boulders to roll down kopjies! I remember rocking a few boulders of that size! But we were never able to dislodge them.
Great to get news from the most magic place on Earth every week!
Cheers for now!

Good afternoon Norman,
Njelele 'the scared hill'.
Thank you for the lastest Gordon Park News Letter and attachments.
I was interested to see the mention of Njelele. Is this the same Njelele (cave of the Rain Godess, 'Umlimo') near Toghwana Dam, where the local woman population, when passing the cave used to leave a grommet of woven grass as a tribute to the Rain Godess? There were a number of fantastic cave paintings in the cave and the most outstanding was the painting of the giraffe. It is always a pleasure to get the latest happenings in the scouting field and the National Parks attachment certaainly brought us up to date with the Rhino poaching problems being encountered both in Zimbabwe and South Africa.
This type of information is not mentioned on the local news in the UK.
I have noted the two web sites mentioned in the Parks letter and will be visiting them shortly.
It is sad to read about the desperate situation that you are encountering with the lack of rain. We on the other hand are having a months rainfall in one day and is causing large areas of flooding. The river Svern which flows on the edge of Worcester town centre, was reported to be 9 inches below the pavement level and with all the rain up country, no doubt the level will continue to rise.
Fortunately there are flood barriers in place and should restrict the overflow.
Needless to say this does not seem to trouble the swan and duck population which take the fast flowing water in their stride. Do hope that you do not have problems with the fires this winter. Can remember fighting fires with Arthur Edwards at his home near Whitestones School.
All the best and thank you once more for a superb and appreciated up-date.
Roy Pilkington.

Communicating with us at MIC 2012
The 2012 Michigan International Camporee is a little over a week away. I imagine the Queens Royal College Scouts are very involved celebrating the 100th anniversary of your Scout group and the Valdemar Atterdag Group is involved in Jamboree Denmark. We are sorry that Denmark, Trinidad & Tobago, and Zimbabwe will not be represented at MIC 2012. However, we would like to invite your Scouts to interact with MIC 2012 participants while we are at camp. To do that, they should go to http://2012mic.org/ and link at "My MIC Connect." They can register there to become part of our controlled facebook-like group, see what everyone is doing, and communicate with our participants. You can also visit http://www.micamporee.org/ and see your flags there as past MIC participants
Best wishes,
Bruce McCrea
