Givens Hapadziwi
It is with a heavy heart that we bring you the sad news of the tragic death of our brother Givens Hapadziwi from Zimbabwe. He died on the spot in a road accident near Kwekwe on 27 September 2019 night, on his way to Byo (Bulawayo) to host the Matabeleland Scouts Golf Tournament. He has been laid to rest at Umvutsha Park Cemetery.
Our late brother Givens Hapadziwi joined Scouting as a boy in 1982 at 50th Bulawayo (Percy Ibbotson). He became a patrol leader in 1988, then a troop Scouter before moving to Harare for higher education and work. He was elected as member of Matabeleland Scouts Council in 2005. In 2007, he was elected as vice-chairperson of Matabeleland scouts council, with being in charge of all scout properties in the province as his major duty. He was elected Honorary Treasurer of Zimbabwe Scout Association in 2011 and served two terms. In 2017, he was elected as member of Matabeleland Scout Council. In 2018, he was coopted into the 17th Africa Scout Conference organising committee and was in charge of finances. Until his fateful demise, he was serving on the Zimbabwe Scout Associations National Executive as chairperson of the finance and properties subcommittee.
We commiserate with his family and friends, and the entire Scouting fraternity in Zimbabwe.
May his soul rest in eternal peace!

Richard Shilling
It is with sadness to announce the passing of our Scouting Luminary and Hon. Vice President of Matabeleland Scout Council Mr Richard Shilling.
Mr Shilling passed away at Mpilo hospital after a long battle with illness.
Our Scouting hero has gone home after staggering years of invaluable service to the Scouts movement. He began his Scouting in the late 1950s in Mpopoma and was very instrumental in the construction of the only Scouting hall in the western surbubs, the Mpopoma Scout hall, home of 56th Bulawayo Scout Groups, one of the best groups to come out of Matabeleland Province.
He moulded a lot of young people from the 1960s and continued to do so over the years, there are notable individuals within his community that went through his guidance in his blistering Scouting career.
He attained the highest Scouting awarded the most Highest Scouting award in 2005, the Golden Lion award.

His accolades are as follows:
Group Scout leader 1970
Medal of Merit 1972
Woodbadge 1981
Long service Award 1982
Silver Eagle 1989
Hon. Vice President 1990
Silver elaphant 2000
Assistant Provincial Scout Commissioner General 2004
Golden Lion 2005.

Good evening ladies and gentlemen
Due to the natural disasters that have occurred in Manicaland, Chimanimani areas, most families have been displaced from their homes and have nothing to wear/eat.
In the spirit of togetherness and Creating a better world it is prudent that we come together as Matabeleland Scouts and donate our old clothes or any other necessities that can cushion the situation.
We call upon all our members and well wishers to show selflessness in these trying times.
Donation can be dropped at the Provincial Headquarters.

Dave sadly passed on yesterday afternoon. Dave has been an outstanding scout leader for as long as I can remember - as a youngster he was a King Scout, an 11th Riverside Cub Leader in the 1960s, has his woodbadge, is on the Leader Training Team and all the Matabeleland and Provincial Councils. His quiet, stable aura provided a calm security to everyone he influenced. He freely gave his time and expertise as a lawyer to Matabeleland scouting and will be missed by everyone. Our sincere condolences to his family.

Bulawayo Rover crew badge
Please can you assist me in identifying the above badge. It is an old badge, but in well preserved condition, on felt. Different from the scarf badge currently in use by the 1st Bulawayo, but might it have been one of the old, original 1st Bulawayo? My own personal view is of it being associated with the 1st (2nd?) (Raylton) Rover Crew of RAF Heaney days during and just after WW2, but I have nothing to support that opinion, although cant help wondering if in fact it is a military badge. Many thanks for your help.John Gurney - email address

Passing of Des Classen on 28 January 2013
Dear Corinne, Sandy and Gavin
I am so sorry to hear of the passing of Des. Des was a true gentleman, whom I knew from his days in the Mechanical drawing office on the Rhodesia Railways and as a Scouter of the 8th Bulawayo Hillside. I was so pleased to see and chat with him during his last visit to Gordon Park, a service Sunday, at the beginning of 2012. Although a much aged Des at that visit, he was still the same cheerful fellow and I am sure was so pleased to be in "The Heart of Scouting" reminiscing about his camping days in Scouting, especially as our Provincial Radio Ham for our Jamboree On The Air camps. Rosemary Moody joins with me in sending her condolences. I will mention his passing at the Baden-Powell day service on February 26 and will have an extra candle on the altar in his honour.
Love Norman

It is with great sorrow we learnt of the passing on of Aurielle Wilcox, wife of the late Provincial Commissioner Chuck Wilcox. Aurielle has been part of every Bulawayo Scouts life - from the first day he visited the Scout Shop to try out his new uniform, to seeing Aurielle at every District Scout event, outing and camp. The amount of vouluntary work Aurielle clocked up in the Association is unmeasurable, from catering and cooking at camps, to running the office, to being the most efficient secretary to almost every meeting at every level, distributing notices, minutes and information to Matabeleland Troops, parents and Scout Leaders. Aurielle is unreplaceable and is missed by everyone. Our sincere condolences to her loving family around the world.

John had passed away in South Africa in February of this year and it was decided to hold a Scout Memorial Service for him at Gordon Park. Mr. John Landau was invested into the Scout Movement in the 1st Bulawayo (Pioneer) Scout Group as a Wolf Cub in January 1937, and progressed through Scouting to become the first Chief Scout of Zimbabwe, in 1980. This position was followed in 1995 by a few years as President of the Boy Scouts Association of Zimbabwe. The Memorial Service was conducted by Dr. Eric Bloch, and will be reported on, in greater detail in the next edition of the "Pioneer Trail Magazine".
4/May/09 Zimbabwes 50th Internatonal Trade Fair in Bulawayo.
Scouts created an excellent exhibit where you started off on a pioneering trail by crossing over a Monkey bridge, then climbed a tower of about six metres. From here you were transported across an aerial runway to the top of another tower. Then to get back to ground level, one had to abseil down the front of the tower. This was a popular form of entertainment for the children visiting the Fair. Also on display was a model campsite with tents, tables and a few other bits and pieces. Then there was a section on Aids Counseling, which now forms a part of our Scouting syllabus.

Hi,
The Zimbabwe contingent consisting of 3 adults & 11 kids are now being hosted by my district. Although Vicky & I are in Surbiton, just up the road the Kingston Sea Scouts (KT25BB) have very kindly hosting them at the hall. Of the leaders you will know is Chuck Gardner, GSL of 2nd Borrowdale. They fly back to Zim on Thursday.

I saw on some history Chuck has on his laptop that Norman Scott has been warden of GP since 1977. 30 years now. Wow what an achievement!
