1976-02-16 Death of top Scout 'Skipper' Knapman Mr Jack "Skipper" Knapman, trainer andmentor to generations of Bulawayo Scouts, died in Bulawayo yesterday after an illness. He would have been 74 today. Mr Knapman who was responsible for creating Gordon Park, the Scout Training Center in the Matopos, joined the scout movement in London in 1913 and knew many of the early Scout Leaders. He came to Rhodesia in 1923 and ran the 1st Bulawayo Troop until 1946. "Skipper" Knapman was inchange of Leader Training for Rhodesia and started the Bulawayo Scout shop which he helped to build. For years he led Scout work parties at Gordon Park, where he supervised bricklaying, plumbing and pump maintenance. He was an expert wood and leather worker. He took up the hobby of amateur radio late in life and passed his Radio Society examination at the age of 71. The Boy Scouts Association awarded him with the Medal of Merrit in 1929 and the Silver Wolf in 1936. He was invested as an Officer of the Legion of Merit by the President of Rhodesia in 1972.
