1977-10-22 Scout go on the air
Mr Guy Martin of the Matabeleland branch of the Radio Society of Rhodesia, explaining the technicalities of the radio set to a group of Bulawayo Boy Scouts Stuart Sanderson, Wayne Skews, Colin Smith.
Radio call sign ZE1JAM was on the air yesterday at Hillside Dams, Bulawayo, greeting Boy Scouts in Rhodesia, South Africa and many other parts of the world. Local scouts, black and white, were taking part in the Jamboree-on-the-Air, a world wide wireless communications network which was set up this weekend. The theme of the weekend was "communications" and when he spoke to about 75 scouts, the Provincial Scout Commisioner of Matabeleland Mr Chuck Wilcox said that people in Rhodesia had not in the past communicated with eachother as much as they should have done.
First Link. The first radio contacts were made with South African Scouts with Mr Guy Martin, of the Radio Society of Rhodesia operating the set. Yersterday the boys had talks from experts on various aspects of communications and this morning all the Rhodesian-Jamboree-on-the-air stations will be linking up. This will be followed by more discissions and a practical exercise.
