GP 50th Annaversary Celebrations - 1986 - Part 1 of 2 - txt updated 8/1/2007 I believe Mr Malcolm Ross hired a plane & gained permission from National Parks to make one flight over Gordon Park to take an aerial video of the opening ceremony. So the opening shots are an aerial view of the Mtjellelie Valley, Showing Gordon Park & the Skipper Knapman parade ground. There is a picture of the plane, the Camp Organiser in a green beret with Megan Jones and 8th Hillside Cubs in the background. Norman Scott printed an opening banner saying "Gordon Park, Matopos, 1936-1986, Zimbabwe" featuring Gordon Park's Logo of the Wild Boars Head. The Torch of Friendship was lit in Harare & run 360 miles, in relays, by scouts, down to Bulawayo. The Marathon running Scouts who completed the final 32 mile stage from Bulawayo to Gordon Park, run onto the Knapman parade ground holding 4 lighted torches. Mrs McNiellage is facing the camera in dark glasses, the back of Ken Nortje who is in Uniform, with a scout hat and Yellow Golden Lion medal ribon round his neck. The run round the Parade Ground, Bulawayo Sea Cadets with their white sailors hats on in the background; 11th Riverside Scouts with green/black scarf's; a Bulawayo Girl Guide, the Camp Organiser in a green beret; 8th Hillside scouts with their red & blue scarves, to eventually 3rd Air Scouts & cubs in their dark blue uniforms. then the backs of 5 Gordon Park Crew with their Brown Scarves - Barry Knight wearing glasses on the left, Hylton Garriock, Graham Williams, Graham Ross, Andy Blundell. Then the VIP's up on Gordon Park Rock overlooking the parade ground - left to right Chief Scout of Zimbabwe John Landau, Rev. Haynes, International Commissioner Chas Martin, Mr Gumbo, Matabeleland Provincial Scout Commissioner Chuck Wilcox. Breaking of the 3 flags; lighting of the Flame of friendship up on Gordon Park Rock; blessing by Rev. Haynes; Scouters at the base of Gordon Park Rock:- on the right is Ken Nortje; to the left is John Richardson (11th Cub Leader) Opening Speach by Mr Gumbo, aerial view of the opening parade circle of 400 scouts/cubs from all over Zimbabwe. Pictures panning round the parade of the 8th Scouts/cubs... and the 3 scouts who broke the flags - Simon Miller-cranko closest to the camera with his brown Gordon Park scarf and white lanyard on. The VIP's - Left to right: Chas Martin, Rev Haynes, Mr Gumbo, John Landau, Chuck Wilcox & address by Chief Scout John Landau saying "Fellow Scouts..." Mr Gordon Shaw - an original member of the Gordon Park Crew, talking to everyone (while brandishing a knife) and he cuts the 50th Annaversary cake baked by (). Matabeleland Provincial Commissioner Chuck Wilcox thanks everyone for the cake and jokes that he is going to take it away and eat it! Gordon Park's Camp Commissioner Norman Scott gives instructions to proceed down to the dam. (Mr Eames in the background with a red hat on?). Graham Williams is then handing out pieces of cake to two 8th Hillside cubs, and Andy Blundel is digging in the trunk - counting out the pieces.
