1977-10-20 Boy Scouts were alert
Some of the Scouts and Guides at the Jamboree on the Air learn about direction finding at Hillside Dams. Below: some items which added to their excitement - apparently suspicious food tins found at a kopje near their campsite.
Security forces yesterday praised the alertness of Bulawayo Scouts, who on Saturday found some apparently suspicious items of food. They were taking part at Hillside Dams in their annual Jamboree on the Air. In a sheltered part of a kopie near the campsite the boys found a Zambian coin, a page of a Zambian newspaper and empty food tins. They immediately reported it to their scoutmasters who contacted the police. A sweep of the area was carried out, but nothing further was found. The police believe that the finding were linked to a simular incident last year, when investigators proved that the derbis was the result of a picnic being held by pupils of the now closed Whitestones School, several of whom came from Zambia.
